Newspapers (Winston-Salem Journal, Wall Street Journal, USA Today)

Hello all (sorry in advance for any confusion)

First off, for those of you who did not know, we have been experiencing some real frustrations with a few of our newspaper titles, WS Journal, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. I just wanted to let everyone know what has been going on.

Winston-Salem Journal: It comes via mail and we have not received a copy in over 20 days. I have spoke personally with the Winston-Salem Journal as late as last Friday and I am waiting for a supervisor to call me with answers to this problem.

Wall Street Journal/USA Today: The carriers stopped bringing the papers to the library drop box about two months ago. We found out that they were taking papers for the entire university to one place, the campus police station. So, I went their daily for about three days to get the papers and physically bring them back. However, one day I went, and the papers were not there. None of them.

Turns out that all papers (even though the address on ours says O'Kelly Library, Library Drop box) are now being taken to Blair Hall. I am working as hard as I can to get to the bottom of this - one phone call after another. My next step is to call other universities in the area to see if they have the same issues. If not, I will need this to make a more formal, declarative complaint against our carrier.

When I can get some solutions to this problem I will let everyone know.

My apologies for any inconvenience.

Dr. Pittsley assignment

Hello

Several of us have had Dr. Pittsley's students at the reference desk. The basics of the assignment are as follows:

The students have to address a health topic using news articles, some of which that have to be from the city or area that the student is from. The rest can be national articles or reliable web based articles (WebMD, National Institute of Health, etc.)

He has his own citation format. They are to create a reference page and number the articles from 1 to ??. When they make references to an article in the paper, they are to cite it by listing the number of the article in the reference page (not footnotes or endnotes, just the numbers).

The following format has worked for me. Dr. Pittsley has emailed me via email and said that this is waht he is looking for. However, you may choose to more or less that I what I have done.

1. I read over the student's paper and notice everywhere that Dr. Pittsley has left a blue highlight for them to cite their source. I offer to them the many ways to make reference to a source.
Example 1: Johnson addresses childhood obesity by....
Example 2: Johnson goes on to say...
Example 3: Paraphrase or use a direct quote and list the article number at the end.

2. Then I look at there sources and make sure that they have used some local news articles and some national/international news articles. If not, I show them Lexis-Nexis and point out how to search for their topic and narrow the results geographically so that they can find articles from the region that they are from.

3. Finally, I make sure that they make a clear argument in the introduction as to how they will address their health topic or what they intend to accomplish in their paper. Then I look at the conclusion to be sure that they are consistent with the introduction.

Protocol for requests from NC Knows

Hello

Ms. Wilson brought to my attention email requests that we are receiving from patrons using NC Knows, the 24/7 "Ask-a-Librarian" service to our reference desk email. Has a protocol been established to handle these?

I had some ideas in mind that I shared with Ms. Wilson, but if there was something previously in place, then there is no need to re-invent the wheel.

student with special needs

Hello all

I helped a young man tonight who has some motor skills challenges and needs more help than usual. His name is Clay and if you have not met him, he catches you off guard because he walks up to you and will begin talking like he's known you for years. Anyway, if he approaches you just be patient with him. Also, feel free to send him to me if I am around - trust me you will know him when you see him.

Newspaper Article On My Birthday Assignment

This periennial speech class assignment has me thinking that there must a better way! Can I appeal to any who might work with the Speech faculty to find a rationale for this assignment and at the very least, give us a heads up? Also, has anyone successfully found an electronic resource for newspaper articles from the 1980s? I ended up taking a young man up to the microfilm collection and just pulling a Winston-Salem Journal reel for him to browse thru. Thank goodness, he wasn't born on a Sunday!
